Stop Screaming to People who aren’t interested

How does marketing traditionally work? A question that comes up every time I have a brand new take over the world idea. I jot down the heading ‘Marketing’ and immediately list cold calling, direct mail, print media etc. Then a realisation – this  isn’t going to work..

I forget the author (sorry) but his words were:

You cannot do today’s job with yesterday’s methods and be in business tomorrow

Outbound marketing traditionally consists of shouting your message and everybody and anybody and hoping they come to you and buy your product. however, when was the last time you bought something from the dozens of direct mail letters that come through your door? Furthermore, when was the last time you gave a cold caller the time of day to finish his annoying little pitch?

What is the actual point in screaming at this mass of people? Conversely, as a start-up business, how often do you have the capital to effectively scream at these people and GET NOTICED and convince amongst the mass of other companies and ad pressure.

If you have an idea – you have it because you believe that people exist who are interested in your business, product or service. Why don’t you scream SPECIFICALLY at them and simply just let them know you exist – as they essentially are looking for you already!

Hey, 2010 – we have the Internet… the Internet is the greatest thing ever in the history of my loooooong and extensive 23 year life. Free. Free. Free specific marketing. Users log on everyday and go to Google and look for YOU. Amazing isn’t it. All you have to do is ensure that you can be found – enter SEO.

As a potential business owner / marketer etc : it is essential that you  have a basic SEO understanding. Search Engine Optimising your online presence is a must do. Articles upon articles exist about SEO – a great resource that educated me is http://www.freediyseo.co.uk/ and also the godly: http://www.seomoz.org/

Social Media – twitter - facebook etc. There are potential clients everyday talking about needing you and what you have to offer. Engage, Connect and network. Do not spam. By interacting with your users, not only are you prompting them that you exist, you are educating them about what is you do and building relationships. Relationships equal long-standing loyalty. When you find a barber / hairdresser that you like, understand how they work and feel comfortable with – you go there from then on – you form a loyal relationship.

Stop screaming to people who aren’t interested when you launch your next idea and optimise for those who are looking for you. Build an organic following as a hub, an army of approval that will help you conquer the masses!
